When a natural environment is developed, a significant portion of the surfaces become impermeable; for example, buildings, roads, and parking lots. This enables the previously infiltrating water to now stream across the region, necessitating the collection, transport, and placement of the natural environment at precise locations.
Through the construction of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS), the hydrological response of a developed region is designed to be as similar as feasible to its initial condition.
These include; swales, detention basins, infiltration basins, pervious pavements.
